In today's globalised economy, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and sustainable development have become important issues for both businesses and governments.
These two factors are not only related to the image of corporate social responsibility, but also the key to achieving ‘carbon neutrality’, which promotes enterprises to improve their capabilities in the three dimensions of environment, society and governance. All in all, ESG and sustainability are important tools for addressing global challenges and a key way for companies to realise social value.
ESG and Sustainability
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), these three are important considerations for corporate sustainability and a key way for altPlus to improve its self-ability. From bamboo pulp coffee filters and straws to bamboo fibre tableware for everyday use, altPlus takes on social responsibility with low-carbon, sustainable products. Let's learn about the importance of ESG and sustainability in business development.
1. What is ESG
ESG emphasises the need for companies to pay attention to the ecological environment, fulfil their social responsibilities and improve their governance.
ESG means environmental, social and corporate governance.
● Environment: refers to the environmental impact of the enterprise's production and operations, including but not limited to greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, waste disposal and water management.
● Social: refers to the performance of the enterprise in terms of social responsibility, including employee welfare, labour rights, community impact and supply chain management.
●Corporate governance: refers to the management structure and governance mechanisms of an enterprise, including board structure, corporate transparency and anti-corruption measures.

2. Sustainable Development Theory
Sustainable Development Theory means meeting current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Equity, sustainability and commonality are the three basic principles.
3. Commonality
● Common goal: Both ESG and sustainable development aim to promote the long-term healthy development of society. ESG provides actionable paths and assessment criteria for sustainable development by measuring corporate performance in the environment, society and economy through specific indicators.
● Evaluation Criteria: ESG is an important indicator system for measuring corporate sustainability. By assessing the performance of an enterprise in environmental, social and governance aspects, investors and stakeholders can better judge the enterprise's sustainable development capability.
●Mutually reinforcing: The ESG framework is an important means of promoting sustainable development for enterprises. By improving environmental performance, strengthening social responsibility and enhancing governance, companies can enhance their competitiveness and reduce business risks, while at the same time bringing positive impacts to society and the environment. In turn, sustainable development concepts and goals inspire companies to pay more attention to ESG performance, creating a virtuous circle.
4. Differences
●Differences in focus: ESG focuses on specific practices and performance assessment at the corporate level, while sustainable development focuses more on long-term development strategies and goal-setting at the macro level.
●Different scopes of application: ESG applies primarily to corporations and investors as an assessment of corporate social responsibility and investment decisions. Sustainable development, on the other hand, applies to governments, businesses and all sectors of society, and serves as a guiding principle for overall development planning and policymaking.
●Different assessment methods: ESG usually assesses corporate performance through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, such as carbon emissions, employee satisfaction, transparency of governance structure and other specific indicators. Sustainability, on the other hand, relies more on policy goals and development indicators, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Apple's Sustainability Goal
There is a close relationship between ESG and sustainable development. By strengthening ESG practices, companies can contribute to the realisation of the sustainability goals, while sustainable development provides strong internal motivation and external support for companies to carry out ESG practices.

Apple is also committed to the efficient use of materials. Apple launches Apple Watch range with packaging made from 100% fibre. Apple also ensures that their wood, bamboo and sugar cane fibres are certified to FSC, PEFC, Bonsucro and other standards.
The report shows that Apple's more ambitious plan is to achieve full footprint carbon neutrality by 2030, and we will be looking to Apple to accomplish this exciting goal as well.
