The Production Process of Fiber Molding


We have already gained a preliminary understanding of fiber molding products and the altPlus®Purbam™ series,do you know how they are produced?Follow altPlus to understand the production process of fiber moulded packaging and you can better learn about green application solutions.


1.Pulp preparation

Pulp can be obtained from wastepaper, wood fiber, bamboo fiber or other fibrous materials. The raw materials are soaked, pulped and refined to form a uniform pulp suspension. Adding special additives to the pulp can make the product have functions such as waterproof and oil-proof. Adding appropriate pigments can make the product have various colors.

2. Mold forming

At present, there are two major types of moulding types in foreign fiber moulding production equipment: vacuum slurry moulding method and slip casting molding method.


Vacuum slurry  moulding  method:Vacuum slurry molding is a process that utilizes the negative pressure generated by a vacuum pump to draw slurry materials (such as pulp, plastic slurry, etc.) into a mold. After solidification or cooling, the slurry forms into the desired shape of the product.


The principle behind this method is that the vacuum pump extracts air from the mold, creating a negative pressure environment inside. This pressure difference is then used to pull the slurry into the mold, causing it to adhere tightly to the inner wall of the mold.


There are three types of vacuum slurry molding:

Cylinder screen type: Continuous rotating production ensures high efficiency but requires a significant investment in mold projects. It is suitable for manufacturing large batches of shaped products, such as egg trays.

Rotary type: The production efficiency is lower than the cylinder screen type, making it suitable for medium-volume and non-standard production in industrial settings.

Reciprocating lifting mechanism: Although its production rate is lower than the cylinder screen type, the equipment investment is relatively small. It is suitable for the industrial production of non-standard, small-batch, and fast-cycle packaging products.


Slip casting molding

Slip casting molding: Slip casting is a molding method where the required amount of pulp (material) is calculated according to different pulp packaging products and then quantitatively injected into the molding cavity for adsorption molding. This molding method is suitable for standardized products with little variation and fixed shapes and is commonly used in the molding of tableware products.


3.Drying

The wet pulp product is dried by methods such as hot air drying or infrared drying (180~220℃) to remove moisture and make the product more stable.


4.Trimming and finishing

The dried pulp product is trimmed to remove excess edges and burs. Finishing processes such as surface treatment and printing can be carried out if necessary.


5.Inspection and packaging

The finished fiber molding products are inspected for quality and then packaged for storage and transportation.
