From China's Bamboo Sea to Global Living: Promoting the New Trend of “Bamboo instead of Plastic” with altPlus

“Bamboo instead of planstic” is a new trend of sustainable development. Domestically, Sichuan and Anhui have introduced promotion strategies to accelerate the pace of low-carbon transition. Internationally, KFC Canada's bamboo fiber buckets and Starbucks bamboo fiber products highlight green innovation. In the midst of the low-carbon transition, altPlus will also continue to explore the possibilities of bamboo fiber products.

Chinese goverment and the International Bamboo and Rattan(INBAR) jointly launch "Bamboo instead of plastic", aiming to promote green transformation. In short, it not only replaces traditional plastic products with bamboo products, but also involves the use of chemical processes to extract and transform the main components of bamboo to create new industrial materials.

It is worth mentioning that among the many options available to replace plastic, bamboo stands out for its unique advantages and is called the best material. Bamboo grows quickly, is abundant, and the collection process has a low impact on the environment. Therefore, it is increasingly favored by daily necessities as an ideal and stable source of raw materials.

China's Bamboo Sea:Sichuan and Anhui

It is well known that the bamboo forests in Sichuan, China, are among the best in the world. According to the latest data from the National Forestry and Grassland Adminisration, by the end of 2023, Sichuan Province's bamboo forest coverage had reached 18.41 million mu(approximately 1.23million hectares), with the total bamboo industry output value surging to 111.23 boillion yuan, making a 9.0% year-on-year growth, highlighting Sichuan's robust strength as a major province in bamboo resources.

This rich bamboo forest resources for the “bamboo instead of plastic” to provide support to accelerate the pace of application of environmentally friendly materials. In order to combat plastic pollution, Sichuan Province has actively responded to national policies. Government departments have issued relevant programs to promote the development of the bamboo industry in six major areas: industry, application, technology, funding, resources and market.

And Anhui Province, upholding the belief that “green waters and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains,” has a bamboo forest area of 6 million mu(approximately 400,200 hectares), placing it at the national forefront.  The annual production of bamboo forest is nearly 4 million tons, and the total output value of bamboo industry is 26.6 billion yuan in 2022. Chizhou as anhui “bamboo instead of plastic” pilot city, is making full use of the advantages of bamboo resources, accelerate the development of bamboo fiber products, and promote the related enterprise projects to land quickly.

 Global Life:KFC and Starbucks

“Bamboo instead of plastic” is more than a slogan, it's a global goal in action. In 2019, KFC Canada announced that they were working to find an eco-friendly alternative to their iconic fried chicken bucket. The following year, an innovative bamboo fiber bucket was created, highlighting the world-renowned brand's commitment to sustainability.

As a global leader, KFC's environmental initiatives go far beyond that. They have also introduced tableware made of bamboo, cornstarch and sugarcane fibers, and have committed to completely phasing out all non-recyclable, non-recyclable plastic packaging by 2025.

Starbucks proposes to use bamboo fiber materials in coffee cups, tote bags and other product packaging to achieve carbon reduction goals. 40% of coffee grounds and 60% of native bamboo fiber are blended to make a new material that turns waste into treasure, thus reducing carbon by 70% in the supply chain packaging material segment.

This move sets an example of green innovation for companies around the world, which is a sustainability goal advocated by altPlus.
