‘Terminal in a garden’ – altPlus’ engineered bamboo applied in new Terminal 2 of Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport
2022
Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport Terminal 2
Story
The 255,661sqm facility developed by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) pays homage to the city of Bengaluru, and is designed around four pillars: the ‘terminal in a garden’, sustainability, technology, and art & culture. It houses around 110 retail and dining outlets managed by a range of partners. The new terminal is located on the northeastern side of Terminal 1 and is designed by SOM. T2 is designed as a tribute to the Garden city of Bengaluru and the passenger experience is meant to resemble a ‘walk in the garden’.
Engineered Bamboo Solutions
The terminal interiors are clad in engineered bamboo inspired by traditional Indian cane weaving, to gives the terminal a “contemporary yet classic” look and feel. “The engineered bamboos used for the first time in India, are fire retardant and long-lasting, while the gardens and forest cover naturally cleanse the air, said by BIAL.
Larsen & Toubro is the construction provider for this project; an Indian multinational engaged in EPC Projects, Hi-Tech Manufacturing and Services. Their bespoke bamboo package has high level requirements in performance: fire performance, toxicity, durability, biological protection and aesthetics. The overall package included column and ceiling cladding assemblies for the exterior and interior environments, in different configurations. The combination of construction engineering, engineered bamboo, and finish execution required for this project require a partner that is rooted in engineered bamboo architectural services and high-level commercial execution. The engineered bamboo solution needed to address all disciplines from the material science level, architectural standards, and localized execution. In the end, there were only two qualified companies to supply for this milestone project which altPlus was fortunate to be selected to. The winning bid for the major package was awarded to Lindner Group / Moso International, while altPlus was selected as the supplier in the later fit-and-finish stage, especially supporting with custom, curved, components for the interior and exterior.

Technical Program Proposed during initial Stage of Design Development
The hardware system designed by the altPlus and Truslink Team is customized to maximize the benefits of bamboo, whereby reducing cost, and eliminating installation issues. The goal was for majority of installation to be completed at the ground level, no screw fastening, cost effective, easy assembly components, and uniform to all application configurations. Developed for Arc e & Arc i product series using M Series LVB materials.
